Floods wreak havoc on India’s financial capital
(CNN) — India’s financial capital and one of its largest cities has experienced its wettest May in more than a century, with the unusually early arrival of the monsoon season causing a ferocious weekend downpour that turned roads into rivers and flooded a newly inaugurated underground train station. Mumbai, a city of more than 12 million, has recorded more than 400 millimeters of rainfall this month so far, according to data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), with much of the downpour arriving late last weekend. The deluge caused chaos and delays across transport networks, including at the newly inaugurated Worli Metro Station. India’s $4 trillion economy is heavily dependent on the monsoon, which brings rains that farmers depend on to support the country’s agricultural sector, which employs nearly half of the country’s 1.4 billion people.
Dozens injured after car plows into crowd
London (CNN) — Dozens of people, including four children, were injured when a driver plowed a car into a parade in northwest England celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s latest Premier League win on Monday evening. A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver, was arrested at the scene, according to Merseyside Police. Describing the collision as an “isolated incident,” police said they were not looking for any other suspects and were not treating the incident as terrorism. Police will reveal the findings of an investigation into the collision so that “all the facts are known,” according to Liverpool’s mayor, Steve Rotheram. Footage from Reuters news agency on Tuesday morning shows the scene littered with debris and closed off with police tape. A police van is parked across the street, blocking the road. Hundreds of thousands of jubilant soccer fans had lined the streets in the heart of Liverpool on Monday, waving flags and flares of red smoke, to watch an open-top bus victory parade to celebrate the iconic club’s 20th top-flight league title.
2 killed, 9 injured in mass shooting at a Philadelphia park
(CNN) — Two people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting Monday night in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, authorities said. The gunfire erupted around 10:27 p.m., Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said during a news conference. The victims killed were an adult man and an adult woman, Bethel said. Three teenagers, ages 15, 16 and 17, are among the injured. “Multiple rounds were fired,” Bethel said. “Different groups of young people [were] out here.” The shooting happened after a car meetup, CNN affiliate KYW reported. No weapons have been recovered, Bethel added. The names of the victims have not been released. Earlier in the day, Fairmount Park had been filled with families and community members enjoying Memorial Day cookouts, CNN affiliate WPVI reported.
Tesla has a Europe problem
London (CNN) — Tesla’s sales plummeted by more than half across the European Union last month even as the bloc’s overall electric car market grew. New registrations for Tesla (TSLA) vehicles fell nearly 53% across the EU in April compared with the same month in 2024, according to data released Tuesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). Across the broader region — which includes the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland — sales cratered by 49% that same month compared to last year, the data showed. It marks the fourth consecutive month of declining annual sales for Tesla in Europe and comes as the automaker faces trouble on two big fronts: backlash from consumers over CEO Elon Musk’s politics and intensifying competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers. As in the United States, Musk’s behavior in recent months has provoked repercussions and protests from people in Europe. The billionaire has backed some far-right political candidates in Germany and the UK, and played a prominent role in US President Donald Trump’s second administration, spearheading efforts to lay off thousands of federal workers. Tuesday’s data comes on the heels of Tesla reporting its first drop in annual global sales for 2024, and the biggest drop in quarterly global sales in history during the first quarter. That resulted in net income falling 71% in the quarter.
