Texas mall shootings:Â The Texas Department of Public Safety identifies 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia as the shooter who killed eight people at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, on Saturday. Investigators have found that he spent time on his computer visiting Nazi and other radical websites. Garcia used an assault rifle in the mass shooting. He was wearing body armor and carried extra bullets in high-capacity magazines.
Brownsville pedestrian deaths:Â Police in Brownsville, Texas, were expected to take into custody today the driver of an SUV that ran a stoplight and killed eight pedestrians outside of an immigrant shelter yesterday. The driver was hospitalized undergoing treatment for injuries received in the incident. The SUV he was driving went over a curb, flipped and slid down the sidewalk. Investigators did not immediately say whether it was an accident or the driver deliberately struck the people.
Trump and Biden:Â A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that President Biden’s approval rating is now at 36% with 56% disapproving of his performance in office and 58% of Democrats believing the party needs to find someone else to run in 2024. The poll found that Trump would beat Biden in a rematch, with 44% saying they’d vote for Trump while 38% said they’d vote for Biden. The Washington Post/ABC News poll found that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also would beat Biden for the presidency, 42% to 37%.
Russia’s Victory Day:Â A day before tomorrow’s celebration of its Victory Day holiday, Russia today launched a series of drone attacks on targets in Ukraine. Ukraine says it shot down all of the drones before they could reach their targets. Russia celebrates the victory over Germany in World War II on Victory Day.
Passenger compensation:Â The Department of Transportation has begun the process of establishing new rules that would require airlines to compensate passengers with hotel rooms, meals and other expenses when passengers experience long flight delays or cancellations. The added compensation would be on top of ticket refunds that already are required.
Tyson financials:Â Tyson Foods today reported second quarter 2023 sales of $13.1 billion and a loss of $49 million. Among Tyson’s brands are Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm and Ball Park. CEO Donnie King characterized the current market Tyson faces as challenging but said he expects strong future growth for the company.
Vida Blue dies: Vida Blue, the left-handed pitcher who helped guide the Oakland Athletics to three consecutive World Series championships between 1972 and 1974, passed away on Saturday at the age of 73. His career stretched from 1969 to 1986 and he was the first of only five pitchers in Major League Baseball history to start the All-Star Game for both the American League (1971) and the National League (1978).
