School shooting:Â Republican legislators in Tennessee have come out against Democratic efforts in the state to tighten gun control laws in the wake of yesterday’s mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville. Three children and three adults were killed at the private school by a 28-year old who was armed with at least three weapons. Police killed the shooter. They found additional guns at the person’s home. The shooter at one time attended the school.
Zelenskyy’s trip:Â Ukrainian President Zelenskyy visited the northern part of the country today as part of a weeklong trip to visit with troops and civilians and evaluate progress made in fending off the Russians. Zelenskyy has been meeting with Ukrainian field commanders to plan a possible spring offensive against the Russians.
Migrant facility fire:Â Thirty-nine people are known dead and 29 injured in a fire at an immigrant center in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just over the border from El Paso, Texas. Mexican authorities said this morning that the people came from Central and South America. They said that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Opposition skeptical of Netanyahu move:Â Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is postponing his plan to take over the court system in Israel in view of the nationwide strike and demonstrations yesterday and over the weekend in opposition to his move toward a dictatorship. Protest leaders, however, believe that Netanyahu merely is buying time to regroup for another effort to take over the Israeli courts and wipe out the corruption charges against him. Netanyahu has established a new national guard in Israel that he controls, bypassing the country’s military.
Kim wants more nukes:Â North Korea’s state-run news agency reports today that the country’s leader Kim Jung Un has met with North Korean scientists and told them to make more fuel for nuclear bombs. Kim told the scientists he intends to dramatically increase the size of North Korea’s nuclear stockpile.
Alibaba makes plans:Â The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. said today it plans to split itself into six companies, each of which could go public with initial stock offerings. Stock in Alibaba already trades on the New York Stock Exchange. Alibaba reported 2022 revenues of $134.6 billon and net income of $9.8 billion.
