Flooding aftermath:Â Severe flooding due to torrential downpours hit parts of Pennsylvania and New York state, including parts of the Hudson Valley, yesterday. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared emergencies for Orange County and Ontario County, which is in Western New York. One woman was missing in Orange County as a result of the flooding. A portion of the Palisades Parkway near the Bear Mountain Bridge was washed away. New flooding is anticipated for today in parts of the Northeast.
Biden in Britain:Â President Biden is on the first day of a week-long trip to Europe with a stop today in Great Britain where, in addition to meeting with Prime Minister Sunak he went to Windsor Castle to meet with King Charles. Support for Ukraine in the war with Russia along with Ukraine’s possible entry into NATO were among the international issues being discussed. In an interview that was aired yesterday on CNN, Biden said Ukraine is not yet ready for NATO membership.
Putin met with Prigozhin:Â A Russian government spokesman said today that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Yvegney Prigozhin, the mercenary leader who tried to stage an uprising against Putin, met shortly after the uprising failed. The spokesman said that the meeting lasted three hours, and Prigozhin’s key generals also attended. They all are said to have pledged their loyalty to Putin.
PGA board member quits: The PGA Tour confirmed this morning that its board member, Randall Stephenson has quit because of concerns about the deal the PGA made to merge with Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf. Stephenson reportedly said that he was resigning because of the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi hit squad. The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the merger.
North Korea’s new warning:Â North Korea charged today that the U.S. has been violating its airspace with flights by spy planes. The North Koreans warned that they may in the future shoot down U.S. planes that continue to enter its airspace in order to spy. North Korea also accused the U.S. of engaging in nuclear blackmail by sending a U.S. nuclear submarine to visit South Korea.
Nassar stabbed:Â The Associated Press reported this morning that Larry Nassar, the one-time doctor for Michigan State University who was convicted of sexually abusing an estimated 300 female athletes, was stabbed multiple times during a fight with another prisoner at a federal prison in Florida. The AP reported that a source said Nassar was in stable condition today.
