Competition for State of the Union
When Donald Trump delivers his the 2026 State of the Union address to the 119th Congress tonight, some Capitol Hill politicians will be at other events. An anti-Trump event called “State of the Swamp” is scheduled to take place at the National Press Club and a rally is scheduled to take place on the National Mall. Trump’s primetime speech comes as he remains deeply unpopular. A CNN poll released Monday shows his approval rating at just 36%, down from 48% last February. Victims of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein are among those expected to be in the audience for Trump’s speech.
House Speaker Johnson defends Republican accused of having affair with employee
House Speaker Mike Johnson is defending Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales who is being pressured to resign amid allegations he had an affair with an employee who later died by suicide. Johnson conceded the accusations were “very serious” and that he has urged the San Antonio Republican to address them with his constituents directly. Johnson said he understands that there’s an investigation in Texas that has been going on for some time and the Office of Congressional Conduct also is investigating. Johnson had endorsed Gonzales for reelection to his San Antonio-area seat.
Cleanup continues after Northeast blizzard
The Northeast is reeling from the blizzard named Hernando that swept the region overnight Sunday and throughout Monday, dumping more than two feet of snow across several states. Dangerous conditions prompted multiple emergency declarations and travel bans as tens of millions of people under blizzard warnings hunkered down. Parts of the East Coast, including New York, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City, will briefly climb above freezing later today. But meteorologists caution that any melted snow is likely to refreeze after sunset, creating slick conditions through Wednesday morning.
Mexico violence continues after killing of cartel leader
Mexico is grappling with unrest after its military brought down its most wanted drug lord, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. He died after being wounded during a raid in Tapalpa on Sunday, triggering clashes that left dozens dead. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said authorities are now restoring “peace, security, and normalcy” after suspected gang members torched buses and businesses while confronting security forces. The U.S. State Department advised on Monday that some areas of Mexico have “returned to normal,” but cautioned U.S. citizens in Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and Ciudad Guzman to continue sheltering in place.
Guthrie family offers $1 million reward
The family of Nancy Guthrie has offered a $1 million reward for the safe return of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. The mother of TV personality Savannah Guthrie disappeared from her secluded Tucson home after she was last seen on Jan. 31. Local, state and federal law enforcement surged to the area and have spent over three weeks scouring the rugged desert landscape for Guthrie or any evidence that could bring her back home. Investigators believe the masked person seen on the doorbell camera footage of Nancy Guthrie’s Arizona home the morning she is believed to have been kidnapped was also at her doorstep on another night, according to sources.
Four years since Russia invaded Ukraine
Ukraine today is marking four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Russian President Vladimir Putin believed his military would conquer Ukraine within a week. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored his country’s resilience in a video, saying: “Our people did not raise a white flag — they defended the blue and yellow one. He has not won this war. We have preserved Ukraine, and we will do everything to secure peace and justice.” Then death toll has been estimated at 140,000 Ukrainian soldiers and 17,000 Ukrainian civilians and up to 325,000 Russian military.
