Warmth and toys for less fortunate
EMPIRE CITY CASINO teamed up with CATHOLIC CHARITIES for the seventh consecutive year to provide area families in need with a bit of warmth and some holiday cheer through the casino”™s annual “Christmas Spirit” Coat and Toy Drive. TIMOTHY J. ROONEY, president and CEO of Empire City Casino, presented the organization with hundreds of toys and coats. A fellow family-owned company, Jams of Costa Mesa, Calif., delivered some West Coast warmth through its donation of 500 new toys for New York children in need.
JOSH BLAKE of JAMS joined Rooney for the presentation, which was accepted by Monsignor KEVIN SULLIVAN, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York; KAREN REYNOLDS, Westchester & Putnam County supervisor of Catholic Charities, along with Sister CHRISTINE HENNESSEY and LINDA CRONSTON of Aisling Irish Community Center.
“It”™s important that we remember what the Christmas season is truly celebrating. We must always remember to give to those in need. We provide our customers with an opportunity to give back and I am always astounded by their generosity,” said Rooney.
The toy and coat drive has become a holiday tradition at Empire City Casino and thousands of toys and coats have been donated since 2007 when the campaign was launched.

CNR receives architectural award
THE COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE”™S WELLNESS CENTER received the 2013 Silver Award from the Society of American Registered Architects. Designed by ikon.5, a Princeton, N.J.-based architectural firm, the center has received numerous awards.
The Celebration of Architecture and Design Award Program was held at the One UN Plaza Hotel, during the society”™s 57th National Conference. Thirty-five architectural firms were honored for 56 design projects across the country at the banquet. Each entry was judged on elements, including program solution, compelling design statement, visual framework, construction system, details, function, social and environmental implications and overall aesthetics.
The two-story, 54,000-square-foot structure includes a 1,500-seat gymnasium, competition-size pool, suspended running track, fitness and aerobics center and classrooms. The use of recyclable and natural materials, such as a grass roof, day lighting and ground-source heat pumps among other features, earned the building LEED-Silver certification for environmental efficiency.
According to the Society, The Wellness Center, completed in 2008, “merges the relationship between building and landscape, and in doing so reduces energy consumption and demonstrates good stewardship of the earth.” The jury noted the “rich use of materials and sculpting light,” and that the center”™s design and execution effectively “rejuvenates the body and mind.”
Judith Huntington, president of The College of New Rochelle, described the center as a place “to promote wellness of the body, mind and spirit.” She stressed the tremendous impact the center”™s technologically advanced class and office space has had on teaching and learning at the college. As a new home for the college”™s Blue Angels athletic teams (NCAA Division III volleyball, basketball, swimming, cross country, tennis and softball), Huntington said that the center has “directly contributed to our ability to draw high-quality athletes to the college.”
