The Barnum Museum, 820 Main St. in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Community Investment Fund (CIF) 2030 – Round Six. This significant funding will support the ongoing revitalization of the treasured National Historic Landmark, located in the heart of downtown Bridgeport. This vital CIF investment along with additional capital support will assist in funding the $5.5 million needed for critical infrastructure, safety, accessibility and historic preservation improvements for the 1893 landmark.
“We are profoundly grateful for this extraordinary investment in the Barnum Museum’s future,” said Kathleen Maher, executive director of the Barnum Museum. “This funding marks a deeply meaningful milestone in our long and challenging journey of recovery. It will ensure that this treasured landmark -–– a cornerstone of Bridgeport’s cultural heritage –– remains a safe, vibrant and welcoming beacon of education, inspiration and civic pride for generations to come. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Governor Lamont, the Community Investment Fund board, and our incredible state legislative delegation for their unwavering belief in the museum’s mission and in the vital role it plays in preserving our history and enriching the life of our city.”
With exterior construction and structural repairs largely completed in fall 2024, the Barnum Museum is entering a transformative new phase of revitalization. This stage prioritizes critical life safety systems, ADA accessibility, mechanical upgrades, and environmental efficiency. The $2 million CIF grant will assist in funding upgrades to fire suppression, alarm, and detection systems; modern climate control, plumbing, and lighting; vital repairs to the street-level brownstone and historic storefront; and the installation of a new ADA-compliant elevator. These improvements will enhance public safety, expand accessibility, and reinforce the museum’s leadership in historic preservation and environmental stewardship.
The Barnum Museum is the last remaining institution directly tied to the extraordinary American showman and visionary, Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810–1891). Owned by the city of Bridgeport and operated by the nonprofit Barnum Museum Foundation Inc., the Museum was officially designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior and National Park Service in 2023.
For more than a century, the Barnum Museum has stood as one of Bridgeport’s most cherished cultural and educational institutions –– preserving the remarkable legacy of P.T. Barnum while celebrating the diverse stories that shape the fabric of the community. Its ongoing revitalization represents a powerful model for urban renewal and historic preservation, transforming a beloved 19th-century landmark into an innovative, inclusive 21st-century cultural destination.
Originally founded by Barnum to promote artistic achievement, scientific discovery and cultural heritage, the museum was designed to inspire the public to see the world as a place of curiosity, knowledge, opportunity and wonder. Long before his famed circus was launched in 1872, Barnum was already a nationally influential entrepreneur, museum proprietor, civic leader, philanthropist, emancipationist, lecturer and author. He was deeply committed to the intellectual, cultural and social development of the community and was a tireless champion for education, freedom and the advancement of society – igniting a legacy that empowers generations to lead with purpose, build boldly and drive meaningful change.
“A bold, immersive, and reimagined Barnum Museum is on the horizon, and we look forward to unveiling it for our cherished community and for our visitors from around the world in the near future,” said Maher.
