Greenwich Hospital recently celebrated the graduation of its 2024 – 25 Project SEARCH interns during a heartfelt ceremony that marked a significant milestone in the lives of three remarkable young adults: Lionel Davis, Nancy Stambaugh and Zabita Syangbo.
Now in its sixth year, Greenwich Hospital’s Project SEARCH program, offered in partnership with Abilis, empowers young adults with developmental disabilities by providing immersive, real-world workplace training. Interns rotate through various departments within the hospital, gaining hands-on experience and professional skills essential for future employment.
“This program is more than just an internship – it is a transformative journey,” said Bob Blenderman, PA, president, Greenwich Hospital, during his remarks at the ceremony. “Their dedication, perseverance and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring. Today is just the beginning of new opportunities and possibilities for each of them.”
Blenderman also acknowledged the vital role of Abilis, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. “Our partnership with Abilis has been instrumental in creating an environment where learning, growth and inclusion are at the forefront. It’s a relationship we value tremendously at Greenwich Hospital.”
Throughout the nine-month program, the interns participated in three rotations across departments including Environmental Services, Food and Nutrition and Patient Transport. With support from Abilis, job coaches and hospital mentors, they developed valuable job and life skills, laying the foundation for future independence and meaningful employment.
To date, Greenwich Hospital’s Project SEARCH program has graduated over 20 interns, many of whom have gone on to secure employment within the hospital and in the wider community. The program continues to be a beacon of what inclusive workforce development can look like when partnerships and purpose align.
