WESTPORT – The Town of Westport is warning residents about online scammers who are sending false public hearing fee notices requiring the fee be paid before a planning and zoning application can proceed.
“The Town of Westport will never request payment fees through phone calls, text messages, personal emails, or payment apps (such as Venmo, Zelle, or CashApp),” according to a public notice sent by the town on Aug. 13.
All official fees are paid directly to the Town of Westport through established and secure payment methods, the notice stated.
The town government advises anyone receiving such an invoice to:
- Not provide personal or financial information
- Not send payment
- Contact the Planning and Zoning Department immediately at (203) 341-1030 to verify the legitimacy of any request.
- Report the incident to the non-emergency line of the Westport Police Department at (203) 341-6000.
