The menage à trois tennis movie “Challengers” has been generating lots of buzz. But what many may not realize is that the story of two men’s players (Mike Faist, “The Crown’s” Josh O’Conner) at a crossroads personally and professionally, thanks in part to their involvement with a player-turned-coach (Zendaya), is set at a second-tier Challenger tournament in 2019 New Rochelle.
While the movie was actually shot in Boston and its environs, a spokeswoman for the sports-minded Sound Shore city said, “New Rochelle is honored and proud to be the setting of the movie. The city invites all those who took part in ‘Challengers’ to come see New Rochelle for themselves and would gladly be the site of filming if there were to be a sequel.”
New Rochelle issued seven film permits in 2023. Additionally, the New Rochelle Marina and various citywide parks – such as Five Islands Park, Hudson Park, Davenport Park, and more – have been the sites for episodes of CBS’ “FBI,” NBC’s “Law & Order,” Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” and Showtime’s “City on a Hill,” as well as the feature film “Freeheld,” among others.
New Rochelle will also be holding a tennis tournament on June 22 at the Pinebrook Tennis Center. Sixteen teams will take part in a doubles event at the 10-court facility, which was refurbished in 2022. For more, visit https://www.newrochelleny.com/1730/Pinebrook-Tennis-Center .
