At least five dead in shooting incident in Park Avenue building in NYC: VIDEO

(CNN) — A New York City police officer and at least three civilians were shot and killed late Monday in a Park Avenue office building. A fifth shooting victim was hospitalized in critical condition. The gunman, who was seen on surveillance video carrying an assault-type weapon as he entered the building, was reported by New York City police to have committed suicide. The New York Police Department identified the shooter as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Las Vegas officials reported that Tamura had a history of mental disorders.

The scene is “contained” and the “lone shooter has been neutralized,” NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch said, while police still had the scene locked down. She told a news conference late Monday night that surveillance video showed a black BMW vehicle being double parked outside of the building and the shooter exiting it and walking to the building carrying a weapon. Tisch said that Tamura had arrive in New York City only a short time before the shootings. Tracking information showed that hi vehicle had been driven from the western part of the U.S. to New York over the last few days.

The shooter was seen walking across the lobby and then shooting the police officer and a woman. He then walked toward a bank of elevators, pausing long enough to shoot two more people. He then took the elevator upstairs where he continued his shooting spree.

The police officer was from a Bronx precinct and was working as a security guard in the building.

The FBI responded to “provide support” at the “active crime scene,” according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

As events still were unfolding, New York City Mayor Eric Adams advised, “Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street,” he wrote.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the shooting and urged people to avoid the area.

The 634-foot skyscraper, located at 345 Park Avenue, includes corporate offices for the National Football League and Blackstone. The building occupies an entire city block and is one of 41 New York City buildings with its own zip code.

New York City’s emergency management system warned of “traffic delays, road closures, mass transit disruptions & emergency personnel” in the area.
