A Yonkers school bus company will unite with an international conglomerate to form a new student transportation service that will operate in Westchester County, the Bronx and the Hudson Valley.
Mile Square Transportation, which said it has a fleet of 460 buses, will join with First Student Inc., which has 49,000 buses in operation in the U.S. and Canada. First Student is owned by FirstGroup P.L.C., a London-based international transportation operator.
The new company will be called First Mile Square L.L.C. and continue to be based in Yonkers, according to a joint announcement from the companies.
Mile Square”™s founder, Harry Rodriguez, will continue to hold an undisclosed position with the new company, according to the announcement. Rodriguez said he has lived the American dream, emigrating from Argentina in 1990 and starting Mile Square with just one bus.
“It has been sometimes overwhelming running the business alone,” he said in a statement. “I believe First Student will provide the expertise, support, training and access to technological advances needed to ensure Mile Square Transportation”™s future success.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The new company will be fully operational by Sept. 1, according to the announcement.
