The New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC) announced it has  extended the student loan repayment relief deadline for borrowers impacted by Hurricane Sandy through June 30.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the appeal to HESC to grant temporary student loan relief to New Yorkers who were affected by Hurricane Sandy shortly after the storm hit in November. Residents of Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties as well as members of the military who assisted in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy were granted a 90-day grace period on their student loan payments.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education also required that federal student loan servicers extend the 90-day forbearance period for impacted borrowers and to grant forbearance to those who have only recently been identified as Sandy victims through June 30.
The HESC also extended the suspension or reversal of delinquency or default notifications to credit reporting agencies, the suspension of wage garnishments, Â and collections calls to federal student loan borrowers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who are delinquent in their federal student loan payments.
