Museum Village, a living history museum in Monroe, has started posting a digital collection of its 19th-century artifacts on Hudson River Valley Heritage”™s website.
Hudson River Valley Heritage is a free digital library of historical resources contributed by libraries, museums and historical societies in the Hudson Valley. It is coordinated by the Southeastern NY Library Resources Council.
Michael Sosler, executive director at Museum Village, said digitizing the collection will allow the nonprofit educational institution to spread its message and information to a larger audience. Some artifacts online include a women”™s fur hat, a marriage license and a children”™s rocking chair, all with a description of the item and its historical context.Â
“This brings just another level of credibility to our mission and our exhibits,” Sosler said in a statement. “What you will see right now is just the beginning. We are planning to add to this on a weekly basis.”
He said collections manager Samantha Geiler and volunteer Joyce Holloway spearheaded the project.
Sosler said people should still visit the museum, which has hands-on experiences and exhibits illustrating the transition from a rural to an industrial culture and economy in America.
