Friends of Karen gala success
Friends of Karen, a children”™s charity, which provides emotional, financial and advocacy services to families caring for a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness, had one of its most successful events to date with its June 14 gala “An Evening in Venice” benefit, raising $370,000 to help children in the New York tristate area.
Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and former Junior League of Northern Westchester president Becki Fleischer were honored with the Sheila W. Petersen Award. Yankees legend Mariano Rivera received the organization”™s Humanitarian Award. Friends of Karen started with one child, Karen, in 1978 and since then has touched the lives of more than 13,000 children.
Cambria Suites developer awarded
Richard Jabara, the president of Meyer Jabara Hotels, was recognized as developer of the year by Choice Hotels for the development of the Cambria Suites in White Plains, N.Y. Meyer Jabara Hotels is headquartered in Danbury.
CPA society appoints leaders
The Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants announced the following appointees to serve on its 30-member Fairfield County Advisory Council for the 2014-2015 activity year: Eliot M. Bassin, a partner in the firm of Bregman & Co. P.C. in Stamford; Alan J. Clavette, managing member of Clavette & Co. L.L.C. in Newtown; and Victoria Giaquinto Rickert, an assurance manager for PwC in Stamford. The CPAs met at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.

Atria Darien announces retirement, appointment
The senior living facility Atria Darien announced that Wendy Winnick-Baskin retired at the end of June from her role as senior executive director there. JoAnn Panella, the community sales director, is assuming the executive director role. Winnick-Baskin joined Atria Darien when it opened, and has been supporting the area for 44 years.
Doctors Express grand opening
Doctors Express, an urgent care walk-in clinic group, officially opened its newest Connecticut location with a ribbon-cutting by city leaders at 3000 Summer St. in Stamford June 12.
Walk-ins are welcome ”“ no appointment necessary ”“ and patients can see an on-site physician right away. Qualified medical staff will provide emergency care for sprains, fractures and other injuries, minor traumas, infections or illnesses in under an hour. The urgent care center will accept most insurance plans and self-payment.
Kennedy Center raises support for autism project
Nearly 200 guests supported the eighth annual Magic Moments benefit for the Kennedy Center”™s Autism Project held at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Bridgeport, emcee by Jocelyn Maminta, a News 8 medical reporter.
The fundraiser serves as the main funding source for autism programs at The Kennedy Center. This year”™s well-attended event netted more than $111,000 and raised vital support for nonfunded programs. The co-chairpersons were two Fairfield couples: Monica and Shawn Matthews, and Marinelle and Mark Mayo.
Autism programs offered by the Kennedy Center have expanded over the past eight years due to high demand.
Greenwich Hospital CEO awarded
The Connecticut chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives presented Frank A. Corvino, president and CEO of Greenwich Hospital, with the Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Award. The award was presented during the annual meeting at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville.
This honor is awarded annually to one senior level hospital executive who has a proven track record in providing leadership in state, local and community activities as well as with other hospital associations.
United Way presents awards
United Way of Western Connecticut held its annual Stamford Community Awards Luncheon honoring companies and individuals with their “Give,” “Advocate,” and “Volunteer” awards June 18.
The Give Awards went to CL&P; GE; Nestl̩ Waters North America; PricewaterhouseCoopers; and Webster Bank. Pacesetter Awards went to: Legg Mason; and Northern Trust. Engagement Awards went to Genworth; and Rain CII. The Leadership Award went to Deloitte. New Partnership Awards went to NBC Sports Group; and Spartech, a PolyOne Co.; Ferguson Library in Stamford; and the Stamford Public Schools. The Advocate Award went to Bob Arnold, president and CEO of Family Centers. The Volunteer Award went to Victoria H. Zerjav, partner, Kelley, Drye & Warren, L.L.P.Ӫs Stamford office.
