Two of Westchester’s largest medical groups announced they will offer new 3-D mammography technology for breast cancer screenings.
Westmed Medical Group will use the Hologic 3D machine in its Rye location and Mount Kisco Medical Group will use the GE SenoClaire Tomosynthesis system. According to both group practices, the new systems take sharper images of the breast compared to 2-D machines, provide patient comfort and emit low doses of radiation.
“I have specialized in breast imaging since 1995, and this is the biggest technological advance in mammography during my career,” Westmed radiologist Dr. Rand Stack said in a statement. “We believe Hologic 3D mammography is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening who have dense breast tissue and women with a personal history of breast cancer.”
Stack said he was involved in a study that compared 3-D imaging to traditional methods, and said the new Hologic technology is superior in quality.
“For five years, I have looked forward to the day when I could bring this new technology to my patients,” he said.
Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime, according to a Westmed press release. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.
“We are pleased to be working with GE Healthcare to provide women with the most precise screening tool available to help detect breast cancer,” John Basile, administrative director of radiology at Mount Kisco Medical Group, said in a statement.
