The Westchester County Board of Legislators has approved a $166.7 million budget for Westchester Community College for 2015-16.
The budget will not raise tuition for students who are Westchester residents. The tuition is projected at $4,280 for the coming year. As the sponsor government for the college, Westchester County will contribute $29,329,234 to WCC, which employs roughly 600 people.
“In a county like Westchester where there is a significant differential in income level, community colleges are such an important part of making quality, secondary education accessible to everyone,” said Michael Kaplowitz, chairman of the board of legislators. “WCC’s mission to make high-quality education affordable creates opportunities for lower-income students and contributes to Westchester County’s social and economic vitality.”
The budget includes $3 million for four projects; upgrades to parking lots at the Valhalla campus, investments in information and education technology, and two projects are for multiyear “planning studies” regarding infrastructure needs.
The 2015-16 budget is the first for WCC’s new president, Belinda Miles, who lauded the spending plan.
“With this financial support, we are poised to lead a new era of growth, service, success and excellence,” Miles said.
There are approximately 13,000 full-time and part-time students at WCC, including 24,000 continuing education students.
