The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the application deadline for those seeking disaster relief loans related to Hurricane Sandy, FEMA officials announced yesterday.
The deadline was extended one month, from Dec. 31, 2012 to Jan. 28, 2013.
Some New York officials were hoping the deadline would be pushed out further because so many residents and business owners are still reeling from Sandy. However, County Executive Robert P. Astorino said he wants to take advantage of the new deadline. He encourages “any homeowner, renter or business owner who suffered damages and losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy to register with FEMA and seek assistance.”
FEMA representatives are available to help those in need at the disaster recovery center at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, which will remain open until Dec. 21.
The county estimates more than 750 people have taken advantage of the in-person help since the center opened Nov. 8. Nearly 5,200 Westchester residents have already registered with FEMA.
Those who still need to register can call FEMA at (800) 621-3362 or visit disasterassistance.gov. Those with speech or hearing disabilities can call (800) 462-7585.
