Gov. Andrew Cuomo may not be doing much publicly to acknowledge he is facing a challenge for the Democratic Party line, but behind the scenes he appears to be trying to block his opponent from appearing on the primary ballot next month.
The New York Times reported that Cuomo”™s campaign is trying to have Zephyr Teachout removed from the Democratic primary ballot for the Sept. 9 election. A state Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday that Teachout, a Brooklyn resident and law professor, hasn”™t lived in the state long enough to be eligible to run. The law states a candidate must live in New York for five years preceding the election, the Times said.
Cuomo maintains strong leads in polling despite an ongoing scandal stemming from accusations that the governor interfered in an anti-corruption commission”™s investigations before he prematurely disbanded the group.
If victorious in the primary, Cuomo will face Republican Rob Astorino, Westchester”™s county executive, in November”™s general election.
