Burke Medical Research Institute New York will receive $420,000 in federal funds to study stroke patients and how to prevent impairments in the recovery process.
The money is a grant made available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to Rep. Nita M. Lowey, who is a ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee.
“Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States, yet treatments that reduce post-stroke impairment are very limited due to a lack of understanding of the repair and remodeling process in chronic stroke,” Lowey”™s office said.
Burke Medical, based in White Plains, will use the money to help develop a hypothesis about how to control inflammation after a stroke. They will test a molecular mediator called CD36 ”” which is used in vascular diseases and obesity ”” in immune cells relevant to the repair and recovery process after a stroke.
