Ernie Tartaglione helped pour the original cement with the mason to create the foundation of his Deli Delicious on Tarrytown Road. At times, he put in 12-hour days at the store he has owned for 28 years.
Last week, Tartaglione closed his doors.
After failing to obtain a variance from the town of Greenburgh”™s Zoning Board of Appeals to install a drive-through window at his establishment, Tartaglione decided to close the business.
“This is a third-generation business,” he said. “My mother was here when we started. I operated it for 28 years and my son was going to take over.”
He said business slowed two years ago “losing about $2,000 or $3,000 a week,” but the economy and surrounding vacancies made it progressively worse. He thought a drive-through window would help spur business.
Tartaglione said he fought an “uphill battle” for the variance from the zoning board, which eventually denied his application.
“Who would open this in another location?” he said. “I”™m already here. I”™m established. You just have to pay your bills to hit a certain plateau. I was right under the radar paying my bills and I”™m the landlord. If someone rented the place, they would have gone out two years ago.”
Greenburgh town Supervisor Paul Feiner released a statement saying this and other vacancies mean “more unemployment, more tax certiorari refunds, more eyesores and make it more difficult to attract other businesses to our town.”
A representative of Greenburgh Zoning Board Chairman Steven Belasco said there was “no vote and the case is closed for decision only to the March 17 meeting.”
New leases on Garth Road
Houlihan-Parnes Realtors L.L.C. in White Plains completed the following lease transactions:
- Go Greenberry Yogurt leased 800 square feet at 58 Garth Road;
- Aspire Women”™s Boutique leased 700 square feet at 62 Garth Road;
- Mediterranean Grill leased 1,100 square feet at 68 Garth Road; and
- Salon DeVoeu leased 1,400 at square feet at 72 Garth Road.
Richard Hendey was the sole broker in negotiations.
