Under a new service dubbed CableWiFi, Cablevision and four other cable TV giants are expanding wireless Internet access to each other”™s WiFi hot spots.
Cablevision Systems Corp. is the dominant cable television provider in lower Fairfield County, with its local operations and News 12 subsidiary located in Norwalk. The Bethpage, N.Y.-based company offers its cable, telephone and online services under the Optimum brand.
It is the most inclusive WiFi hotspot roaming agreement to date among cable operators nationally, according to the trade publication Multichannel News, with Cablevision having structured a smaller deal in 2010 with Philadelphia-based Comcast Corp., which provides service in the Danbury area; and New York City-based Time Warner Cable, which until 2009 was based in Stamford.
Joining that trio under the new CableWiFi are Atlanta-based Cox Communications and Bright House Networks, which is based in Syracuse, N.Y.
