NEW HAVEN — Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) has been awarded an $11,312,803 federal grant to fund a new 35,600-square-yard terminal apron as part of the new terminal development. It is part of a $250 million renovation project.
The funds come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which supports critical infrastructure upgrades that will enhance airport infrastructure and improve the long-term passenger experience.
The project is part of a broader, multi-phase investment in the airport’s infrastructure and long-term growth.
“This federal investment is a major step forward for Tweed-New Haven Airport and the region we serve,” said Robert Reed, chair of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority. “Expanding the new terminal apron capacity allows us to safely and efficiently accommodate more aircraft, improve operational flow, and continue building a modern airport that meets the needs of airlines as we focus on tomorrow’s growth.”
The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation and administered by the FAA with support from Connecticut’s congressional delegation, including the office of U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy.
“This funding represents a meaningful investment in both infrastructure and economic opportunity,” said Tom Rafter, executive director of the airport. “By enhancing our ability to manage more aircraft on the ground, we are strengthening reliability, reducing congestion, and positioning HVN as a key driver of regional connectivity and economic growth.”
“This funding is great news for Southern Connecticut,” said Sen. Murphy. “More and more people are flying in and out of Tweed and it’s really important the airport is equipped to handle more flights without sacrificing safety or ease for passengers.”
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal believes the funding will serve as an economic driver while improving travel convenience and safe transportation in Connecticut.
“Tweed has tremendous potential, ” said Blumenthal. “This $11.3 million will allow Tweed to serve more travelers safely and reliably, and continue to play a vital role in supporting our state’s local economy. I am thrilled to see U.S. DOT and the FAA invest in its success.”
The apron expansion will also improve aircraft parking and maneuvering space near the terminal, reducing delays and enhancing overall safety and efficiency.
Tweed is undergoing a major $250 million expansion, with completion anticipated by 2027-2028. The project includes a new 80,000–84,000 sq ft terminal on the East Haven side, a runway extension of nearly 1,000 feet, and increased parking for 4,000 vehicles.
