NEW HAVEN – Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) has received $3.1 million in FAA airport improvement grants to support its runway expansion and rehabilitation projects.
This funding underscores federal collaboration and support of Connecticut’s federal delegation and the FAA in the airport’s expansion.
Specifically, this grant provides funding for the first phase of expansion design work for several major improvements at the airport. That includes adding new landing guidance lights to help pilots, repairing and strengthening parts of the main runway that have exceeded their useful life, and extending the runway by extending the runway by 975 feet to allow the airport to better serve and meet the demand for passenger service in southern Connecticut.
The project also includes fixing and upgrading connecting taxiways that planes use to move between the runway and terminal areas, as well as adjusting one taxiway to meet updated safety standards. These upgrades will improve long-term safety, reliability and efficiency.
Additionally, this grant will provide reimbursement for Phase 2 of the environmental assessment completed in December 2023. This assessment supported the planned 975-foot extension of HVN’s runway, a key step in ensuring HVN’s long-term growth and operational readiness.

These improvements lay the foundation for the next generation of travel, commerce, and community benefit at Tweed.”
Last week the airport reported it has completed 60% of the design for its new 84,000-square-foot East Terminal. Marking this achievement, HVN unveiled new renderings — the first to reflect the milestone and arriving on the heels of the airport’s April 2025 environmental permit application to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
