On September 3 Stamford Health launched the new Center for BRCA & Genetic Health, serving people diagnosed with genetic mutations or seeking genetic testing and treatment.
BRCA is the name of two genes which control the tumor suppression, and mutations to those genes can greatly increase the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.
“Understanding and navigating a genetic mutation can be overwhelming,” said Sarah Cate, MD, Chief of Breast Surgery and Co-Director of Stamford Health’s Breast Center. “Our team brings together experts in genetics, gastroenterology, gynecologic oncology, endocrinology, plastic surgery and other fields to interpret complex genetic information. Patients receive extensive insight and a personalized plan to help them make choices in support of long-term health and well-being.”
The new center’s team is composed of board-certified genetic counselors, geneticists, and experts at both the Stamford Health Women’s Specialty Center, Breast Center and the Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center.
The center will provide extensive support for patients, access to cutting edge trials, and access to highly rated surgical facilities when necessary.
