The Stamford Athletic Club, a fixture at 75 3rd St. since 1976, is ceasing operations as a commercial facility tomorrow. According to the club”™s website, external vendors will continue to provide services at the location and the facility will be available for private events.
Operational expenses and an expanding schedule of programs offered by the club”™s owner, the Church of the Archangels, were cited as reasons behind the decision.
Among the activities offered at the club were group fitness classes, swimming, basketball, badminton, racquetball and a sauna.
The club was originally a part of the Greek Cultural Center that was opened by the church in 1976. In 1995, the Greek Cultural Center opened membership to the public and renamed the facility the Stamford Athletic Club.
