BRIDGEPORT — The owner of a local barbershop was awarded the $6,000 grand prize in the M&T Bank’s fourth small business accelerator pitch competition last month.
The pitch by Andrea Perez, owner of SmartCut LLC in Bridgeport, proved to be the best in the eyes of the judges at the Nov. 12 competition held at 505 University Ave.
“I’m grateful to M&T Bank for the opportunity to take part in this year’s Small Business Accelerator pitch competition and to represent Bridgeport’s entrepreneurial community,” Perez said. “This support will make a real difference for my business, and I’m excited for what comes next.”
SmartCut is a barbershop dedicated to celebrating Bridgeport through authentic community connections, professional grooming services, and local engagement.
Beyond haircuts, SmartCut builds community pride by creating digital content, participating in neighborhood initiatives, and collaborating with local organizations to highlight Bridgeport’s culture and impact.
This program, which awarded a total of $13,000 to winners, aims to equip entrepreneurs with essential skills and guidance to build resilient businesses, drive economic growth in Bridgeport, and create generational wealth for their families.
The competition was the culmination of an eight-week program launched on Sept. 24 covering topics such as business planning, capital sourcing, financial management, marketing, and branding.
Roody Jean-Baptiste of Discarded Junk Removal in Stratford won the second-place prize of $4,000, and Gabriela Pena Perelli of Balance Business Services in Norwalk won the third-place prize of $3,000.
To qualify, businesses had to be based in Greater Bridgeport or surrounding towns, in operation for at least two years but not more than five years, and in good standing. M&T Bank offers similar accelerator programs throughout its coverage area.
“Watching these entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life is always energizing,” said David Femi, business banking regional manager at M&T Bank. “Their drive to build businesses that serve their neighborhoods strengthens the foundation of cities like Bridgeport. M&T Bank is proud to stand with them and continue investing in the small
business growth that keeps our communities moving forward.”
