DANBURY – A Massachsuetts-based medical technology maker that produces health products for women has informed the State of Connecticut it plans to close its 37 Apple Ridge operations by the end of the year, resulting in 86 layoffs.
In a letter to the Department of Labor dated Oct. 18, Hologic Inc. provided advance notice of the closure of the plant by December.
“As a result of this closure, Hologic anticipates permanently laying off 71 permanent full-time employees with an anticipated last day of employment of Dec. 20,” the letter stated. After Dec. 20, a small number of full-time employees will remain to conduct final post-closure activities, the company announced. Three of those workers will be laid off on Jan. 31, 2025 and 12 more will be laid off on or around Feb. 14-Feb. 21, 2025.
Only about a week ago, the Marlborough, Mass.-based company announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Gynesonics Inc., a privately held California medical device company focused on the development of minimally invasive solutions for women’s health for approximately $350 million, subject to working capital and other customary closing adjustments.
“Gynesonics’ Sonata System complements our offering and will give GYN surgeons across the globe an expanded range of options to treat women suffering from heavy periods and fibroids,” said Brandon Schnittker, division president of surgical solutions at Hologic. “This acquisition furthers our commitment to providing women with minimally invasive treatment options.”
