The National Math and Science Initiative awarded a $13 million grant to the Connecticut Business & Industry Association to train teachers to instruct high school students pursuing careers in science and technology.
High schools in Danbury and Stamford were among 10 districts named to receive assistance. The funds will be used to help teachers develop advanced-placement courses in science, mathematics and English.
Connecticut was one of seven states, including Massachusetts, to receive grants from the initiative, a new, nonprofit organization in Dallas backed by Exxon Mobil Corp.; The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
The National Math and Science Initiative plans to make additional grants in October to spur collegiate students to seek math and science teaching credentials.
