After General Assembly members voted earlier this month to approve an increase in gas taxes to balance the state budget, Republican legislators are holding a statewide protest and launching a petition to stop the hike.
“This is about sending a message that we are sick and tired of new taxes,” said State House Republican Leader Larry Cafero in a written statement. “And we are taking that message directly to Connecticut consumers. They need to know who is supporting this hike and who isn’t.”
As of July 1, gas prices are expected to increase 4 cents per gallon, as the new tax on the wholesale price of gas increases from 7 percent to 8.1 percent.
To stop the tax, Republican legislators will be protesting at gas stations across the state June 25 and asking motorists to sign an online petition at AxeTheGasTaxCT.com. As of June 24, about 6,000 residents had signed the petition.
