BRIDGEPORT – The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut a three-year $780,000 grant as part of its Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program.
The grant will assist veterans across Fairfield County who need support with employment, housing and skills training. Participants of the program receive services such as career exploration, career technical training, job placement, and supportive services, according to the program’s website.
The grant, funded by the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, includes resources to assist homeless female veterans and veterans with children, incarcerated veterans, and other veterans experiencing homelessness.
“We are grateful to the Senators and Congressman who advocate for our most vulnerable residents at the federal level and to have been chosen again to support distinguished veterans who are in need of assistance,” said Heather Marquis, Co-CEO, Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut. “It is deeply rewarding to assist those who have given so much to our country and help them improve their self-sufficiency and quality of life.”
The HVRP has strong partnerships between public, private, and nonprofit organizations, especially those that employ and partner with veterans who have experienced homelessness.
“This $780,000 in federal funding is terrific news for Connecticut veterans,” said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal. “With this funding, Goodwill will be able to provide more veterans with job training, housing and other critical services so they can succeed post-service. Veterans have sacrificed so much for our nation, and I will keep fighting to ensure they receive the highest level of support and care.”
U.S. Rep. Jim Himes hopes to find even more federal funds for these veterans.
“Our men and women in uniform deserve the very best when they return home, especially given the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life,” he said. “I’ll keep fighting to bring federal resources home for our servicemembers to ensure our gratitude is rooted in tangible support.”
Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut was previously awarded a grant with HVRP funding, under which it served 48 veterans per year with housing, employment, and vocational training support. Under this new grant, it is anticipated that Goodwill will serve 65 veterans per year, thanks in part to a partnership with Homes for the Brave, who will serve as a subgrantee.
