As Fairfield County businesses struggled to resume operations Tuesday following Hurricane Sandy, employers faced ongoing uncertainty with blocked roads impeding commutes and some school systems instituting extensive delays.
Area towns were warning Tuesday that many roads remain blocked with downed trees and live power lines. Throughout Fairfield County, municipalities are repurposing schools to provide temporary shelter services, complicating any plans to reopen.
Ridgefield, Redding, and Easton reported schools will be closed for the remainder of the week, with Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi urging all residents to stay home as crews tackled live wires and other hazards.
“Our town has sustained incredible damage,” Marconi wrote in a Tuesday update to residents. “I am sure you have already looked out your window and see what we mean. At 9 p.m. last night there were trees with wires completely blocking Main Street. This is a small snapshot of our town.”
