Clarke Auction Gallery traditional has diverse offerings on sale for charity, but buyers can also count on seeing rare, important paintings and artists taking center stage here. That won”™t change at its next auction but the date has. Instead of its usual Sunday slot, which would fall on Mother”™s Day, the auction has moved to today ”“ Monday, May 15, at noon.
The auction will feature paintings, bronzes, marble sculptures, Asian antiquities, estate jewelry, sterling pieces, Japanese samurai armor, Persian rugs and more. With several local estates participating, the auction will be headlined by one in Scarsdale. Among the goods sourced from this home comes a collection of six paintings and bronzes by Angel Botello (1913-86). Expected to lead the selection is a Modernist oil on board of children with cats, signed and painted in his typical style ($20,000 to $30,000 estimate), 48 by 36 inches.
Called the “Caribbean Gauguin,” Botello painted many such scenes of island life during his three decades on Puerto Rico, moving there after civil war broke out in his native Spain. In works like this, one can see the influence not only of Paul Gauguin but of Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso.
Other Botello paintings competing for buyers”™ interest will be a signed floral still life oil on board ($15,000 to $25,000 estimate) in shades of blue, 48 by 30 inches; and a signed oil on board of a bull ($8,000 to $12,000 estimate), 36 by 48 inches.
Besides excelling with a paintbrush, Botello was adept with bronze. Crossing the block will be his bronze of a mother and child ($12,000 to $18,000 estimate), set on a stone base, signed and numbered 3/6, measuring 23 inches tall; and a 11 ½-inch bronze bust of a child ($6,000 to $9,000 estimate), signed and numbered 10.
Rounding out the auction are a Steinway & Sons Model B, serial number101082 piano from the Scarsdale estate ($6,000 to $9,000 estimate); a Chinese carved celadon jade plaque of trees ($1,000 to $1,500 estimate) and a signed Tiffany Studios floral lamp shade and base ($6,000 to $9,000) with a rare “Bird Skeleton” base impressed “Tiffany Studios New York 442.” The 22 ½-inch shade is impressed “Tiffany Studios New York” and “1509.”
