When it comes to dog breeds, Connecticut residents have a lot in common with the ancient Romans.
Research by pet financial assistance site MyPetChild”¯analyzed a list of 284 dog breeds recognized by The American Kennel Club and used Google”™s data to reveal the most searched for dog breed in each major U.S. city.”¯
”¯The”¯Cane Corso”¯was found to be the most searched dog breed in five out of five major cities in Connecticut ”“ Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, Stamford and Waterbury.”¯
”¯The Cane Corso is an Italian breed of mastiff, whose lineage dates from ancient Roman times, and whose name roughly translates from Latin to mean “bodyguard dog.” Corsi, whose lifespans are between nine and 12 years, are typically muscular in frame, and their protective nature makes them a great family dog, provided they are properly socialized.”¯
”¯The”¯French Bulldog”¯was found to be the second most popular, ranking as the second most searched for breed in four cities ”“ Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury.
”¯The French Bulldog is a result of crossbreeding Toy Bulldogs imported from England with French Ratters. The breed, which was the most popular in 2022 by number of American Kennel Club registrations, typically has a large, squared head”¯and heavy wrinkles above a short snubby nose. French Bulldogs are also characterized by their bat-like ears and typically live between 10 and 12 years.”¯
”¯The”¯Shih Tzu”¯was another popular breed, ranking as the second most searched in two cities ”“ Bridgeport and Waterbury.
”¯The Shih Tzu is thought to be a result of”¯mixing the Pekingese dog breed with the Lhasa Apso in Tibet, and”¯is known for its short snout, long coat, floppy ears and large round eyes set on a small frame. The Shih Tzu also has an impressive lifespan of between 10 and 18 years.”¯
”¯A spokesperson for MyPetChild”¯commented on the study:”¯”¯
”¯“Overall, across 328 major US cities, the most searched for dog breed was found to be the Cane Corso, which came out top in 297 of the cities, the equivalent of 91% of cities overall.”¯”¯
”¯“Unfortunately, this Italian mastiff has garnered somewhat of a negative reputation, and their popularity online might partly be attributed to those looking for a dog that can deter home intruders. In reality, the breed can be very affectionate and gentle and makes for great family pets when properly socialized and handled.””¯
