Greta Gerwig”™s “Barbie” ”“ which starts out as a throwback to 1960s beach comedies and develops into a surprisingly moving meditation on what it means to be human ”“ has proved to be a bonanza for movie theaters and interior design. The aggressively marketed film took in $356 million globally on its opening weekend (July 21 through 23) and $162 million domestically (in the United States and Canada) on 4,243 screens, making it the biggest debut to date for a film directed by a woman.
That had pandemic-weary movie theaters giddy with promotions. The Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, which sold out both screens opening weekend as filmgoers did the “Barbenheimer” double feature (“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” for five hours of viewing), held a Barbie”™s Block Party July 22 and offered discounts and giveaways with local restaurants.
In the meantime, expect the Barbiecore design trend to continue with pink-inspired wallpaper by Tempaper & Co., small and large appliances by Big Chill, home accessories by mDesign and candles by Blythe Shop by Blythe Interiors.
