Indian Point Energy Center’s Unit 2 reactor is back online after it was shut down to repair a water leak Friday.
Entergy Corp., the nuclear plant’s operators, announced Monday night that the reactor, one of two at the Buchanan facility, had returned to service that afternoon.
The reactor was shut down after employees discovered a leak of river water from a pipe in a non-radioactive system. Entergy said there was no threat to public safety, but Nuclear Regulatory Commission standards required the reactor be shut down for welding repairs.
The shutdown came only eight days after the reactor was put back online following a three-month hiatus, during which the company replaced 278 bolts in the reactor’s liner that were found to have faults.
Entergy noted in its latest press release that Unit 3, the plant’s other reactor, has been running safely for the last 194 days.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo pointed to the latest Unit 2 shut down Friday as a sign of “repeated and continuing” problems at the plant, which he has long said should be shut down.
