Unemployment in the Hudson Valley held steady in April at 4.1 percent, but ticked up slightly from 4 percent a year ago, according to preliminary figures released by the state Department of Labor.
The number of unemployed people in the seven-county region increased by an estimated 100, from March to April, and by 1,300 from April 2016.
The regional labor force got smaller, at 1,120,600. That was a decrease of 2,600 people, or 0.2 percent, from a year ago.
Within the Hudson Valley, Putnam County had the lowest unemployment, at 3.8 percent, followed by Rockland, 3.9, Dutchess, 4.0, Westchester, 4.1, Orange and Ulster, 4.3, and Sullivan, 4.8.
The region”™s unemployment rate matches the national rate and is better than the state rate.
New York”™s labor picture improved significantly, with an estimated 76,200 people finding jobs in April. The unemployment rate narrowed to 4.2 percent in April from 4.6 percent in March.
Unemployment rates are calculated with a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics model and based partly on a survey of 3,100 households. The numbers can be revised in the following months as more information becomes available. They are not adjusted for seasonal influences, such as holiday and summer jobs.
