Connecticut workers recovered $6.5 million in unpaid wages this year, thanks to enforcement efforts by the Connecticut Department of Labor.
During the 2013 fiscal year, DOL officials found roughly 2,020 people had been underpaid ”“ some under public or service contracts ”“ while 1,701 workers had not been paid the minimum wage or overtime.
“Working men and women should receive the wages they rightfully earned, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are paid for the jobs they do,” said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in a press release announcing the DOL report. “Putting a stop to bad business practices, including the failure to pay fair wages, helps our workers as well as the entire state economy.”
The wages collected represent an 18 percent increase over the $5.5 million returned to workers in 2012. In 2011, the department returned $6 million.
