More Connecticut businesses shut their doors in 2008 than in any other year this decade, and business starts fell by the steepest margin over the period.
In 2008, nearly 13,500 businesses filed paperwork to dissolve, an 18 percent increase from the year before and the highest figure since the Connecticut secretary of state”™s office began tracking the figures in 2000.
Nearly 27,500 companies opened their doors for business in 2008, but that was an 11 percent decline from 2007 and the second lowest figure this decade after 2003.Â
“It is clear there are concrete steps the governor and legislative leaders can take here in Connecticut to improve our business climate and get back to creating jobs and growing the economy once again,” said Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut secretary of state, in a prepared statement.
