Kimber Manufacturing Inc., the Westchester-based firearms maker and distributor, recently was awarded a $700,000 state economic development grant for a jobs-creating expansion project at its Yonkers plant.
Empire State Development Corp. officials said the grant approved this month by the ESDC board will cover a portion of the company”™s costs to acquire additional production space, renovations and the purchase of machinery and equipment. The total project cost is approximately $10.8 million.
Kimber, which manufactures sporting rifles and pistols used by elite police and military units, will add 42 jobs with the expansion and retain 185 jobs, according to ESDC officials. The company last spring paid $4 million for a 50,000-square-foot building at 16 Harrison Ave. that it formerly leased.
Kimber Manufacturing has its corporate headquarters in Elmsford. The company distributes more than 100 types of pistols and rifles as well as products such as pepper spray through more than 2,000 retail dealers in the U.S. and Canada.
