The Bridgeport Regional Business Council is hosting its 140th annual meeting at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn & Conference Center on Tuesday. The council will recognize business and community leaders and present a quarterly report on key economic development projects.
The luncheon will recognize the 2014 Barnum Financial Group Volunteers of the Year, Bob Abbate of Bob Abbate Marketing and Marcella Kovac of The Bananaland. Both are co-chairs of the council’s marketing and communications committee and have helped launch an updated Business Council website.
The Business Council will also recognize state Rep. Tony Hwang with the AT&T Regional IMPACT Legislator Award. Hwang serves the 134th General Assembly district of Fairfield and Trumbull. He has a track record of being committed to and prioritizing fiscal responsibility, the Business Council said in press release.
The Business Council’s 2014 Hampford Inc. Regional IMPACT Educator Award goes to Joseph Carbone, president and CEO of The Workplace, for creating innovative workforce programs that serve the long-term unemployed and underserved populations.
Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell, which began its commercial operations last December, will receive the Robinson & Cole, L.L.P. Green Business Award. The facility, which produces more than 14 megawatts of clean energy, is the biggest fuel-cell electric generating plant in North America, powering about 15,000 homes, according to the council.
Webster Bank Arena will receive the Fletcher Thompson Inc. Regional IMPACT Economic Development Award for its sports complex, which is part of the city’s Harbor Yard and has had a major economic impact on the city, the council said.
A quarterly report on the region’s key economic development projects will also be released at the luncheon. The publication includes information on projects that are underway and serves as a resource to guide people about current brick-and-mortar developments.
Luncheon sponsors include AETNA Inc., People’s United Bank, UIL Holdings Corp., which is the parent company for The United Illuminating Co., and Southern Connecticut Gas Co. The quarterly report is sponsored by Corvus Capital Partners, Fuss & O’Neill, Inc., Capstone RSP Systems and Main Enterprises Inc.
