Montefiore Medical Group continued working Friday morning to reopen its Cross County Practice at 1010 Central Park Ave., in Yonkers following an accident Wednesday in which an SUV smashed through the windows and wound up in the building’s lobby. The Business Journal learned that patients calling to make appointments to visit the urgent care center at the Yonkers location were being told that the facility was not expected to reopen until Monday. They were being redirected to a Montefiore urgent care facility in the Bronx. A spokesperson for Montefiore told the Business Journal that patients who had appointments at the Cross County Practice were being contacted.

According to the Yonkers Fire Department, first arriving units found that a vehicle had driven through the lobby/waiting area of the medical facility injuring the driver and passenger in the vehicle as well as approximately eight other people. Yonkers Fire Department, Yonkers Police Department, and Empress Ambulance personnel worked together to extricate the two people in the vehicle, treat those who were injured in the lobby, and stabilize the structure.
The Yonkers Fire Department said its crews remained on the scene for several hours ensuring the facility’s structural stability, while police conducted an investigation. The cause of the incident was under investigation. There was speculation that the driver might have suffered a medical event that preceded the accident.

A report said that the driver of the vehicle, age 84, was hospitalized in critical condition. The number of people injured in the incident also was reported to have been seven. A structural engineer had been called in to study the damage and help determine the extent of the damage. The front area of the building that was hit had been boarded up and a new door installed.
Montefiore Medical Group’s Cross County Practice notes that it provides a variety of services including annual physicals, telehealth appointments, lab services, translation services, free parking, presurgical clearance and follow-up appointments after hospital or emergency room visits. The Cross County Practice’s urgent care facility is open seven days a week and most holidays and offers walk-in medical treatments for patients six months and older.
