Brian Conybeare, who has been the special advisor to the governor on the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project the last three years, announced his resignation earlier this week.
In a Oct. 19 letter to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, who chose the former News 12 anchorman to lead the public response and educational outreach team during the bridge”™s design and construction, Conybeare said that with “construction reaching the halfway point, it is time for me to focus on my future, both professionally and personally.”
Conybeare has led more than 700 community meetings and met with 25,000 students to inform the public and answer questions about the new Tappan Zee. He called the job a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in his letter.
Robert Megna, the executive director of the state Thruway Authority, said the transportation agency is grateful for Conybeare”™s commitment to the job.
“Brian Conybeare has been integral to the success of the New NY Bridge project. His talent and leadership have kept the public well-informed and engaged throughout the various stages of construction of the bridge,” Megna said.
A statement from the governor”™s office was not made immediately available.
Conybeare”™s last day will be Nov. 6.
