A fuller picture emerged on Tuesday, Oct. 30 of the damage to homes and businesses in Fairfield County, with Hurricane Sandy floodwaters and fires destroying several houses in Fairfield and Greenwich.
Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau told the Hartford Courant 10 homes near the shore were badly damaged or destroyed, with trees smashing into at least a dozen more elsewhere in the town. Near Sound Beach in Greenwich, three or four homes went up in flames during the storm according to different reports.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy visited Greenwich, Stamford and Bridgeport Tuesday, joined by U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes. Malloy was scheduled to deliver a 6 p.m. update on the state”™s efforts to recover.
As of 3:15 p.m., more than 143,000 Connecticut Light & Power Co. customers in Fairfield County lacked power, some 30,000 fewer than early Tuesday morning. Nearly 90,000 United Illuminating Co. customers in eastern Fairfield County were awaiting restoration of electricity, down from 98,000 earlier.
