Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street near the New York Hilton Hotel, waived extradition this morning and was taken from a Pennsylvania courthouse to the airport at Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, where he was put on board a single-engine turboprop airplane to be flown to New York City.
In addition to facing charges in a grand jury indictment filed by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Mangione was expected to face charges in federal court.
The charges as filed by Manhattan DA Bragg included one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder.
Federal charges against Mangione were not disclosed as of the time of his transport from Pennsylvania but were expected to be unsealed upon his appearance in federal court.
Officials in Blair County Pennsylvania turned over custody of Mangione to personnel from the New York Police Department.
