Two-time Tony Award-winning veteran stage, screen and TV performer Frances Sternhagen has died at her home in New Rochelle at age 93. Her son John Carlin, in an online post, said, “She died peacefully at her home, a month and a half shy of her 94th birthday.”
Carlin continued, “She was beloved by many. I’m very lucky I was able to call her my mom, my friend, my song and dance partner. We were together last week, and we spoke Monday afternoon, said how much we loved and missed one another. I was about to board a plane for London when I got the news,”
Sternhagen made her Broadway debut in 1955 in the play “The Skin of Our Teeth.” Other notable Broadway roles were in “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” “The Good Doctor,” “Equus,” “On Golden Pond,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” and “Angel.”
Sternhagen played the role of Bunny in the HBO series “Sex and the City” and appeared in the NBC series “Cheers.” Her film appearances included roles in “Outland,” “Raising Cain” and “Julie & Julia.”
Sternhagen is survived by her six children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
