According to a report in the CTPost by Richard Chumney, demolition of the former engine factory near Sikorsky Memorial Airport is slated to begin in the fall. The site was once used to produce engines for the legendary Vought F4U Corsair which played an important role in the Pacific Theater of World War II, but is now known for decrepit buildings and extensive contamination.
According to Chumney’s reporting, the new developers, who together formed Point Stratford Renewal, intend to not only remove the current buildings and engage in an extensive remediation effort to clean up the brownfield and other contaminants. They also plan to bring in more than a million tons of cleanfill to elevate the site out of the floodplain it currently sits in.
“Our goal is to make this brownfield revitalization a poster child for the state of Connecticut,” Peter Cabrera, vice president for Point Stratford Renewal told the Post.
