A recent survey of 3,000 employees by outplacement and career management firm Careerminds has revealed that among the absolute worst things you can say to an employee is “act your wage.”
Supposedly a joking admonishment to focus on tasks aligned with their pay grade, the survey found employees did not appreciate the sentiment and found it implied that they should not pay attention to things that may still impact their job.
The surveyed employees were also not fans of hearing about how many “balls they have in the air” or being told that they need to “push the envelope” which struck them as euphemisms that set unclear goals and obscure workload issues.
Rounding out the top 10 least favorite buzzwords was “Spidey senses.” Referring to the way that the comic book superhero Spiderman always has a few seconds of warning when danger approaches, employees generally don’t appreciate the idea that they need to get bitten by a radioactive spider to do their job properly.
