On May 9 Governor Ned Lamont signed into law eight new pieces of legislation sent to his desk by the Democrat controlled state house.
The laws include:
- AN ACT CONCERNING DOG RACING: Although the last dog tracks in the state closed in 2005, this law will prevent the sport from returning.
- AN ACT CONCERNING THE REDEMPTION OF OUT-OF-STATE BEVERAGE CONTAINERS: This law will both make it illegal to knowing redeem cans and bottles purchased from out of state at redemption centers and require the operators to post signage about the law.
- AN ACT CONCERNING CERTIFICATION OF AND CASTING OF BALLOTS BY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS: The Secretary of State is designated the party responsible for adhering to FEC regulations, and the bill also amends aspects of how electors are chosen.
- AN ACT CONCERNING EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CROWDING: With the passage of this law the Department of Public Health will be obligated to collect and publish information about wait times at hospital emergency departments across the state.
- AN ACT CONCERNING CHANGES TO THE PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE STATUTES: This complex piece of legislation will expand the number of business owners required to register and submit to the state’s paid medical family leave insurance, allow the governor to make insurance arrangements with the state’s Tribal organizations, extend paid medical leave to victims of sexual assault, and clarify the definition of a number of terms.
- AN ACT CONCERNING THE REPORTING OF MEDICAL DEBT: Medical providers and the collections agencies they hire will no longer be permitted to report debt from medical expenses to credit agencies.
- AN ACT CONCERNING SOURCE PLASMA DONATION CENTERS: Clarifies a number of regulations regarding the licensing and reporting requirements for Plasma Donation Centers.
