Marriott International has informed the state Department of Labor that 50 Stamford employees will be laid off as of March 31. The cuts come in the wake of Marriott”™s $13.3 billion acquisition of Stamford-based Starwood Hotels & Resorts last year.
“We are currently in the process of integrating the two companies,” Marriott said in a statement. “As that process continues this year, projects and work assignments that were transitional (for a specific period of time) will conclude ”“ and that will impact the associates working on those projects. At the same time, we are reorganizing groups and figuring out our go-forward structure and, as a result, permanent roles with the company are being created and associates in Stamford are applying for those roles.
“The notice given to the state Labor Department is tied to the fact that some Stamford associates have been working on transitional projects and their end dates are coming at the end of March,” the statement continued. “This isn”™t connected to a specific group; rather, it reflects end dates associates in Stamford have known were coming tied to work that was transitional.”
Additional layoffs will occur as other transitional work is completed this year, the company stated.
